This wikiHow teaches you how to find slime enemies in Minecraft. Slimes spawn in swamps and in underground caves. Killing a slime rewards you with slimeballs, which can be used to craft items like sticky pistons and slime blocks.

  1. 1

Travel to a swamp biome. Swamp biomes are characterized by dark trees and grass, vines hanging from trees, and numerous bodies of water. You'll usually find them in ravines or as an extension of a forest biome.

  2. 2

Find the flattest place possible. Swamps are generally flatter than most other biomes, but you'll typically want to find a flat, wide area within the swamp.

  3. 3

Enable your coordinates. On Mac and PC, you can do this by pressing the F3 key; after doing so, you'll see a bunch of white lines of text pop up in the top-left side of the screen.

    • On the console and PE versions of Minecraft, you'll need to open a map to view the "Y" coordinate.
  4. 4

Make sure the spawn area's Y coordinate is between 50 and 70. When in a swamp area, slimes will appear between the 50th layer and the 70th layer.

    • For reference, sea level is at the 65th layer.
  5. 5

Find a dark spot. The light level of your chosen area must be seven or less. You can create an artificially dark area by covering a section of the swamp's canopy with a dirt block ceiling and walls, or you can just find an area with a low enough light level.

    • You can view the light level by looking for the "rl" value in the second-to-last line of text when you have the coordinates view enabled.
  6. 6

Make sure the spawn area has at least three blocks of vertical space. Slimes require two and a half blocks of vertical space to spawn, so you may need to clear out some foliage, which may in turn raise the light level.

  7. 7

Retreat at least 24 blocks away from the spawn area. Slimes won't spawn if a player is within 24 blocks of the spawn area, and they will de-spawn if a player is 32 or more blocks away.

  8. 8

Wait for a full moon. Slimes spawn most frequently during a full moon, so you may want to build a small shack with a bed nearby and wait for the full moon part of the cycle.

    • Slimes will never spawn during a new moon.
  9. 9

Try to force the slimes to spawn. By creating several platforms with at least three blocks of vertical space between them, you can increase the number of surfaces on which slimes can spawn.

    • If you do this, make sure that all of the platforms fall within the 50- to 70-layer range!
  1. 1

Search for caves below the 40th layer. If you aren't able to prompt slimes to spawn in a swamp biome, you may have more luck underground. Slimes spawn in caves located in "slime chunks", which are 16 x 16 x 16 block areas.

    • You have a one in ten chance of coming across a slime chunk.
  2. 2

Add torches to the cave. When below layer 40, slimes can spawn in any light situation; adding torches will both make mining easier and prevent other hostile mobs from appearing.

  3. 3

Clear out a 16 by 16 by 16 room. This constitutes a chunk. Slimes won't start spawning immediately while you're here, but you may be able to force them to do so by adding platforms.

  4. 4

Create four one-block high platforms. These platforms should be stacked on top of each other with three blocks of vertical space between each. Having these platforms increases the possible spawn area for slimes.

  5. 5

Retreat at least 24 blocks away from the spawn area. As with the swamp biome, slimes won't spawn if you're 24 blocks (or closer) away from the spawn area.

  6. 6

Wait for slimes to spawn. If you don't see any slimes within a standard night and day cycle, you'll need to find a new cave.

Add New Question

  • Question

Do swamp biomes have to be big for slimes to spawn?

    Community Answer

No. But the bigger the biome, the higher the chance of finding slimes.

  • Question

Will flattening out the swamp myself increase the chances of a slime spawning?

    Community Answer

Yes, because then there will be enough space for it to spawn.

  • Question

I have been at layer 40 lots and I have been in lots of swamps at nighttime, so why aren't I seeing any slimes?

    Community Answer

Usually they will not spawn the first two nights you spend in the swamp. It may take a while for them to actually spawn near you. It also depends on the moon phase. New moon, no slimes. Full moon, increased chance of slimes.

  • Question

    What is a slime block?

    Community Answer

A slime block is the product of laying out 9 slime balls to make a block, like you would for gold, diamond, redstone, or lapis. A slime block can be used to store slimes more easily or to use to bounce on from far heights. Be careful though, if you bounce off and move away from the slime block, you will take damage from hitting the ground, so hit the slime block every time you bounce.

  • Question

How do you find a slime if you aren't in a swamp biome?

    Community Answer

Go down to around layer 40 or below. The chances of finding a slime chunk (an area where slimes spawn) are low, but it's possible.

  • Question

How do I know if I'm on level 40?

    Community Answer

If you have a map, then look in the upper left corner. Then look at the number labeled "Y". That is your level. Keep digging down until the number labeled "Y" is 40.

  • Question

How long do I have to wait for them to spawn?

    Community Answer

It depends on the time. On a full moon, the spawn rate increases, while a new moon, they will not spawn at all.

  • Question

Are some swamps devoid of slimes?

    Community Answer

No. All swamps have slimes. This biome can create small, medium or big sizes. Be careful, as once you kill medium or big sizes, they multiply.

  • Question

How large are these platforms in the middle of the room?

    Community Answer

It's best to make them 16 x 16 because of the size of the slime chunks. It's also helpful to use F3+G because it will show you the chunk areas.

  • Question

How do I find the slime chunks?

    Community Answer

There is no way to identify a slime chunk other than the fact that slimes spawn in it, so if you want to find slimes underground, you can dig out a large room 3 to 4 blocks high and as many chunks across as you have patience for. Then wait to see in what part of the room the slimes spawn in.

  • Make sure to save the slime-balls for later. You can craft them into many things, such as leads, sticky piston, slime block and magma-cream.

  • You can easily find slimes on flat worlds even during the day.

  • Try using TNT on large amounts of medium slimes.

  • When mining for a slime chunk, make every part two blocks tall. Doing this will mean slimes can't move at all, which makes killing them easier.

  • Slimes will spawn frequently in Superflat worlds, since these worlds are close to the bottom layer.

  • Be careful when mining for slime chunks, as there might be other hostile mobs underground.

  • Type /summon slime in the chat to find a single slime anywhere.

  • Keep in mind that big slimes and medium-sized slimes will deal damage to you. Small slimes can't hurt you, though.

  • Avoid mushroom biomes, since slimes don't spawn there at all.

  • Trying to find slimes is very much a trial-and-error process.
